If you've been reading the British Press lately, you're likely to have seen a number of 'scaremongering' articles about Brits needing to prove they have €100 per day in the accounts / on their credit cards to prove they can be self sufficient during their trip to Spain. Naturally, the social media channels have been going crazy with travellers citing their concerns that they wouldn't be able to do that, and would be turned away at the border.
Here at TravelON.world, we'd just like to set the record straight.
Do you need to prove you have €100 / £97 a day to visit Spain
Although this is not a new rule, post-Brexit life means that Brits could now be subject to it. The Spanish, including the Canary Island, border officials (indeed the border officials of all sovereign states within the EU) have the authority to ask travellers, including holidaymakers, to show that they have the financial means to cover the cost of their trip. It was reported correctly, that this was set at €100 a day with a minimum amount of €900. This could be in the form of a bank or credit card statement, or even cash.
However, for people visiting on a pre-booked holiday, with accommodation already sorted and return flights booked, this is extremely unlikely to happen. To date we haven't spoken to anyone who has been stopped to prove their financial status and given that Spain and The Canary Islands are so reliant on Tourism we can't see it happening any time soon.
We would like to point out that it's never a good idea to travel on your last few pounds in the bank account. It is always a good plan to have enough funds to cover your trip and any arising emergencies that might occur, or even if you discover some of the amazing things to do in Lanzarote and you want to enjoy your holiday a little bit more. That being said, we're not here to tell you how to manage your finances!
In Summary
So to sum up, although it is a rule that British travellers 'could' be subjected to, the chances of getting stopped when you are travelling on a pre-booked holiday to The Canary Islands are very, very slim. So don't let it worry you, and enjoy your holiday in Lanzarote!
